Question #1
How long can you store apples?
1-2 months in the fridge or 6 months in a cool dark place. Now the fridge is great because you have the perfect temperature for your apples but most of us do not have that much extra space in our fridge and if the apples stay in the fridge for too long they can start to lose their crispiness.
If you have a root cellar this would be the perfect place to store your apples for up to 6 months. A garage is another great place to store your apples. But you don’t want to just throw your apples in your garage or root cellar. There is a certain way you will want to store them and If you keep reading we will get there!
Question #2
Where is the best place to store apples?
Ideally the fridge. When you store your apples in the fridge it is best to store them in the crisper drawer. And make sure that they are stored by themselves. If you mix them with other fruits and veggies it will have a tendency to rot faster.
But like I said most of us don’t have that much space in the fridge. So that leads me to my next question.
Question #3
How to store apples without refrigeration?
This method is really quite simple and will keep your apples fresh for months.
Supplies
- Apples
- Newspaper
- Container (cardboard box, wooden crate, cooler)
Instructions
- Pick the best apples
You want to make sure to pick the best apples to store. If you choose apples with bruises or blemishes then you will risk that apple rotting which will then lead to the rest of your apples rotting.
This would be a no go!
This is perfect!
But what if you have an apple that does not look horrible but is not in perfect condition? Well, it’s up to you but I would suggest picking only the best. Trust me it is not worth losing your whole crate of apples over a few crappy apples.
- Start Wrapping
Now, remember to take care of your apples. When you are handling them treat them gently. They can bruise very easily and then you won’t want to store them.
With that being said lay you apples out on a table and start wrapping them individually with the newspaper.
Side note: You do not need to wash your apples before storing them. If they have any noticeable dirt on them you can just wipe it off.
- Pack your Container
Now I know it will be tempting to pack your container/box full but you just want to do one layer. If you pack the apples on top of each other then they will bruise and then rot much sooner.
I like to use a cooler because I have to store it in the winter anyway so I might as well put it to use. Shallow cardboard boxes work very well also.
- Store your Apples
As I said the best place to store apples is in temperatures 30-40 degrees. For me, this would be my garage. I live in Michigan and my garage stays around those temperatures most of the winter.
And the other nice thing is if I store it in the garage I see them every time I leave the house so it reminds me to check on them and make sure they are staying fresh.
As I said with this method you should be able to store your apples for up to 6 months. This was great news to me because I can get a large bag of apples at the orchard for $9 compared to $5 for a small bag at the grocery store throughout the year. And you can’t beat the taste of fresh apples.
Question # 4
What apples store the best?
When I go to the orchard I can usaully pick what kind of apples I want. So if you have this option these are the apples that will “store” the best. The way you store them does make a difference but actaully the type of apples you choose to store might be more important. Here are the the top 5 most commonly found apples to store.
- Fuji
Has a sweet flavor and is commonly used to make applesauce. But is also very tasty for fresh eating.
- Idared
Has a tangy- tart flavor and stores very well.
- Pink Lady
Has a crisp flavor and according to my 7 year old it is “sweet and good”. A little side note my child is super picky and will only eat certain apples and you can bet this is one we will be storing this year.
As I said there are other apples that will store well but these are the 3 that are most common to most of the states.
Question # 4.5
How to choose the best apple to store?
But what if you have apples that are not on this list? How do you know if they will store good or not? What do you look for in a good storing apple?
Heartiness! Try to find apples that are still a little hard and not mushy.
Question #5
What do I do with the imperfect apples?
After I got done with packing up the perfect apples I still had a lot of imperfect ones left. When you get apples from the orchard they are not all perfect like the grocery store ones! So what do I do with all the imperfect apples? I’m glad you asked.

You can do it without the tools but if you make jars and jars a year like we do the tools are totally worth it. We have this sauce maker that makes the job so much faster. Here is the one I have.
( Click on picture for link to amazon)
Ingredients
- Apples

- Cut apples in half
- Put a few inches of water in a large pot
- put apples in pot
- cook until apples are mushy ( stirring to avoid burning)
- put apples though sauce maker
- add cinnamon & sugar until desired taste is reached
Notes:
Once your apple sauce is done you can wat it fresh, freeze it or can it.
Question #6
Can you freeze apples?
So what if you have done all the ideas above and still have more apples? Is freezing apples an option?
Yes, you can freeze apples!
Frozen apples will not taste the same as fresh apples but they will work great for any of the desserts I mentioned above or really baked in any way.
Question #7
How do you freeze apples?
Okay, are you still following my thought process or did I lose you? My mind goes all over the place as I learn and I am hoping to lay this out in a way that makes sense. So once I learned that I could freeze apples I wanted to know how to do it.
Freezing whole apples
If you don’t have time to cut your apples or prepare them in any way this is a great way to preserve them. This way when you do have time you can prepare them the way you want at that time.
Procedure
- Wash apples
- Freeze on cookie sheet
- When frozen completly trasnfer to ziplock bag
Notes:
Make sure you follow all the steps because if you just through your apples in the freezer without the cookie sheet step it will not work. You will end up with a big clump of apples.
Freezing Apples Slices
- Peel apples
- Core apples
- Slice or dice (whichever you prefer)
- freeze on cookie sheet
- When frozen completly transfer to ziplock bag
Question # 8
What are the benefits of apples?
So if you are like me you are a very busy person! Doing any of the things in this article might seem daunting. So why would you do them? Well first of all it will save you money!
But the main reason for me is the health benefits. My kids love apples and it is an easy and healthy snack. And did you know what an apple can do for you?
- Reduces your risk of stroke
- Prevents dementia
- lowers bad cholestrol levels
- wards off breast cancer
- helps with weight loss
- promotes good gut bacteria
- helps bone health
- protects your brain
Yes, please! I will take a little but of each of those! Could you imagine the how great it would be if each family gave their kids an apple as a snack unstead of a processed snack?
An apple has
- B vitamins
- c vitamins
- dietary fiber
- Phytonutrients
- calcium,pottasium and phosphorus
- antioxidents
As a side note try to get your kids to eat the peels because most of the fiber and antioxidents are in the peels!
Question # 9
How many apples can I eat a day?
If apples are good for you how many can you eat a day?
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” 1-2 is a good number to shoot for. Like anything you can overdo it. Now you probaly won’t have any crazy side effects from to many apples you might just be spending some extra time in the bathroom.
Question # 10
How to keep apples from browing?
Another question I had was how do you keep apples from browning? I love to take apples to get togethers with some kind of yummy dip but I hate how they always turn brown. Did you know that there are many ways you can keep your apples from browning? Today I am going to share the top 3 ways.
- Soak apples in sprite or any drink with citric acid.
- Soak apple slices in a solution of 1 quart of water and a 1/2 tsp. salt for 3-5 minutes.
- Dip apple slices into lemon juice
Notes:
All of these method work good but from my experince I would say that the salt water is the best. With the pop you will add some sugar to your apples and with the lemon juice your apples could take on some of the lemon flavor.
Question # 11
What is the easiest way to peel, slice & core apples?
So when you are using apples in bulk and need to peel, core and slice them it can be a very tedious job. Using a knife takes forever and you lose a lot of the apple. The other hard thing is when your kids want to help but if they do they will lose most of the apple or cut themselves.
This apple peeler is awesome! It sticks to your counter or table and all you do is stick the apple to the prongs and twist the handle until the apple goes all the way through. When the apple comes through it is peeled and cored. So much faster then using a knife. I use this all the time. For making apple sauce storing apples in the freezer, making desserts Etc.
