Gardening

My mom has had a garden for as long as I can remember. I helped her every once and awhile when I lived at home but never really had a love for it. Now that I have my own house I love gardening.

It is something I can do to get some alone time and I find it peaceful and relaxing. But there are a few things that I would recommend to make your gardening experience more enjoyable.

  • Mini Tiller
  • Hoe
  • Rake
  • Shovel
  • Hand tools
  • Heirloom seeds
  • Cages
  • Black plastic

1. Mini tiller

A mini tiller is super handy. If you plant your rows for enough apart you can use the tiller in between the rows and then you don’t have to weed by hand! My garden is very large and there is no way I could keep up with it by hand.

The mini tiller I have is not on amazon currently but here is one that is very similar.

2. Hoe, Rake & Shovel

This are pretty self explanatory. It is pretty much common sense. But something I did want to add is that if you can find it wooden tools will last much longer. My husband does not like the microfiber tools nearly as well. He feels that they break much easier. So here are some on amazon.

I could not find a good wooden shovel on amazon. So I would suggest to just run to your local store and grab one. But for a plastic shovel this is a good one!

3. Hand Tools

I honestly use the hand tools in the garden more often. I use the small shovel for the planting and the other tools for weeding close to the plants.

4. Heirloom seeds

Heirloom seeds are more than you might think! I always thought they were better just because you could keep them and replant. But that’s not the case. It turns out that they also will give you a better vegetable in general.

A lot of the hybrid seeds are made for selling. So the plant is made to grow tougher skin and all grow at the same time. I had no idea! So if you can getting heirloom seeds is the way to go.

We got my mom these ones on amazon and she loved them!

5. Cages

Depending on what you grow I would recommend cages. I use them for tomato’s mostly. But they are useful for beans that climb as well. This is actually a good deal for them.

6. Weed Prevention

So I don’t mind pulling weeds but when you have a huge garden that is a lot to keep up on. And I really don’t like using chemicals at all.

This year I tried something new! Cardboard! I planted like normal and then laid cardboard down all around my plants. I then put straw over the cardboard. It is amazing!!! I have not had hardly any weeds at all. And it is basically free.

I just saved my cardboard boxes but if you need something like right now you can get the black fabric and do the same thing. My neighbor has a very large garden and he tried the plastic for the first time and loved it. It not only keeps the weeds out but also the straw helps keep the moisture in the plants. His plants did incredible!!

Conclusion

I hope this list was helpful for you. And make sure to keep checking back because as I find things in the garden that work well I will continue to update this list!
